Experiment List

Experiment Name Schedule Picture
Smart Vibration Platform

This lab is aimed to offer you hands-on experience on structural vibration control using an MR or SMA braces. This lab is based on the Smart Vibration Platform (SVP) device, as shown in the figure. With the MR damper and the SMA braces, the damping ratio and the stiffness of the system can be adjusted, respectively. Please note that a laser range sensor is used to measure the displacement of the platform.

Remote Experiment
Shape Memory Alloy

This lab is aimed to offer you the hands-on experience in testing and control of an SMA wire actuator. The device shown in the figure will be used in the lab. The goal of this experiment is to study the hysteretic behavior of the wire actuator and how the driving frequency changes the hysteresis loop.

Smart Vibrating Beam

Structural vibration has been always a major concern and this motivates engineers to study and control the undesired vibration on many structures. Piezoceramic material is a commonly used smart material that can function both as an actuator or sensor. The smart beam has two surface bonded lead zirconate titanate (PZT) patches, one as an actuator and other as a sensor. The experiment demonstrates the vibration of the beam at different modal frequencies and active vibration suppression of the beam under Positive Positioning Feedback (PPF) control for the first mode.
